There are plenty of contractors in the Hudson Valley who can build an addition, remodel a kitchen, or replace a roof.
But what if you just need someone to fix the door that won’t close?
Or patch a hole in the drywall. Hang a TV. Install a couple of shelves. Fix some loose trim. Tighten a handrail. Take care of the collection of little things around the house that somehow never becomes important enough to deal with.
That’s the kind of work I’m interested in.
I’m Tom Scalisi, and I provide small home repair and installation services in Kingston and the surrounding Hudson Valley. I’m not trying to be your general contractor. In fact, a big part of what I do is handle the jobs that really don’t need one.
If you’ve looked at something around your house 30 times and said, “I really need to fix that,” there’s a good chance it’s the kind of job I handle.
What kinds of jobs does a handyman handle?
“Handyman” is a pretty broad term, and that’s part of the problem. Depending on who you call, it can mean anything from hanging pictures to practically rebuilding half the house.
My focus is much simpler: small repairs, installations, adjustments, and maintenance jobs around the house.
That can include things like:
- Small drywall patches and minor wall damage
- Interior door adjustments
- Door hardware replacement
- Trim and molding repairs
- TV mounting
- Shelf installation
- Curtain rods and blinds
- Picture and mirror hanging
- Furniture assembly
- Cabinet adjustments
- Loose handrails
- Caulking and small finish repairs
- General punch-list items
A lot of these jobs are exactly the things homeowners keep putting off because each one seems too small to make a phone call about.
I put together a separate list of small home repairs Hudson Valley homeowners tend to put off, because once you start looking around, the list usually gets longer pretty quickly.
When should you call a handyman instead of a contractor?
The line isn’t always perfectly clear, but job size and scope are usually good indicators.
If you’re planning a major renovation, structural work, substantial plumbing or electrical work, or something that requires permits or specialized licensing, you probably need a contractor or the appropriate licensed trade professional.
But calling a remodeling contractor because your bedroom door rubs against the jamb doesn’t make much sense.
Neither does waiting three months hoping somebody eventually shows up for a job that might take less than an hour.
Older Hudson Valley houses create plenty of small jobs
Kingston and the surrounding Hudson Valley have a lot of older homes.
Older houses have character.
“Character” is also sometimes another way of saying nothing is quite square anymore.
Doors move. Trim separates. Floors settle. Walls have been patched five different ways by five different people. Somebody mounted something 25 years ago using whichever screw happened to be closest at the time.
None of that automatically means there’s a serious problem.
It does mean older homes tend to generate a steady supply of small repair work.
I go deeper into that in Common Small Repairs in Older Hudson Valley Homes.
Can you just make a list?
Absolutely.
In fact, that’s often the most practical way to hire me.
Maybe you have:
- One door that won’t latch
- Two loose cabinet doors
- A shelf that needs to go up
- A hole in the drywall
- A towel bar that’s pulling out of the wall
Individually, none of those jobs feels big enough to call somebody.
Together, they’re a perfectly reasonable home repair visit.
And once they’re finally done, there’s a decent chance you’ll wonder why you spent the last year looking at them.
What I don’t want to do
I’m deliberately keeping Tom Scalisi Home Repair focused.
I’m not trying to take on full kitchen remodels, additions, large construction projects, or work that should be handled by a licensed specialist.
There are plenty of contractors for that.
I want to handle the small stuff well.
That means showing up for the jobs homeowners often have trouble getting somebody to take seriously, and taking care of them without turning a simple repair into something bigger than it needs to be.
Ready to get it off the list?
Text me a few photos, a short description of what you need done, and your town. I’ll take a look, tell you whether it fits the type of work I handle, and we can figure out the next step.
